Legal Considerations

General: Under 18 U.S.C. 1716, any matter that is outwardly or intrinsically dangerous or injurious to life, health, or property is deemed non-mailable. The deliberate deposit of such matter in the mail is considered a crime punishable by fine, imprisonment, and/or other penalties.

Identifying Hazardous Materials

If you are shipping any materials that you suspect might be hazardous, please consult the following resources to determine the appropriate classification:

Marking Orders in eHub Ship

To mark an order or multiple orders as containing hazardous materials:

  1. Locate the order(s) you want to modify.
  2. Click the “Delivery Options” button at the bottom of the order page.
  3. Select the Hazardous Material (Hazmat) code category that applies to your package.
  4. Within each category, there are specific subsections associated with each carrier willing to transport the given package.

Additional Notes

  • Hazmat codes can also be added through automation as well as through the products page found in inventory.
  • The rate shop may display services that are not appropriate for shipping certain hazardous materials. It is the shipper’s responsibility to understand and comply with all laws and regulations pertaining to any hazardous materials they intend to ship.
